Mark Twain Hotel Project to be Completed by Summer 2007

Hannibal’s historic Mark Twain Hotel is experiencing  new life as the building receives a complete renovation  from top to bottom.  Hannibalians have been saddened in the past years to see one of its historic gems in such  need of repair.  In recent years, the first floor had been  renovated and had accommodated receptions and parties.  However,  many feared the cost of renovation would prohibit the three floors of former hotel rooms from future  restoration.  Carlson Gardner, owner/developer, has come to the rescue and plans 34 modern apartments for seniors 55 and older.  Original door openings will be maintained,  but other respects will be very different.

The new apartments will offer one or two bedrooms, all new services and code-compliant systems with the restored beauty of the famous Mark Twain Hotel.  For apartment information: call (417) 447-6303 ext 119.   www.midamproperties.com

Veterans Road Nears Completion

Veterans Road, which is in the third and final construction phase, is scheduled to be completed by late summer of 2007 which will take it to the southern border of Marion and Ralls counties, north of the General Mills plant.  Hannibal has needed more roads for local traffic since McMaster’s Avenue has become quite busy.  Veterans Road has helped commuters resolve some of those traffic problems, but as businesses and new subdivisions evolve, other roads have begun to take a heavier  bur-den .  After the southern end of the project is completed, it is anticipated that traffic will increase on Veterans Road, Paris Gravel Road and Route W.  The additions of Veteran’s Elementary School, Clover Road Christian Church and the new Swiss Colony have and will continue to significantly increase traffic on Highway W.

There are some who believe that the north and south section of Veterans Road should be extended to Highway 61.  According to Marion County Commissioner Willy Richmond, "It was never meant to be a bypass.”   The new Veterans Road allows local residents to get to destinations much easier without using McMaster’s Avenue and will greatly benefit commuters as Hannibal continues to grow west.

Bear Creek Warehouse Expansion

Bear Creek Warehouse on Red Devil Road will be expand-

ing its facility.  Plans for the facility include an addition on-

to the original building that will more than double its cur-

rent capacity.  When the expansion is completed, Bear Creek Warehouse will be one of the largest warehouses in Northeast Missouri.

The current warehouse was completed in 2005.  It was built

to be used as a public warehouse and distribution center pri-

marily for General Mills.
